“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” – Deuteronomy 6:4
This is a well known verse, yes? Many people could probably quote this verse in a heartbeat, and it’s a good one. But why? Why is this verse such a significant verse in the Bible? Why is the concept of God being one so powerful, and so precious to us? It seems like a simple enough concept, so why the hype? Let’s look at three things that make this subject so amazing!!
1 – God’s oneness with Himself: First I want you to think about this, think about the Trinity. In Matthew 28:19 we see the Trinity stated entirely, that means God the “…Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit…” So God is 3 persons, and yet in Deuteronomy 6:4 it stats that He is one! How can this be? God is 3 and yet one all together? It doesn’t make sense, but it is so awesome! Many people try to make physical illustrations about how this can be, just to give us an idea, but really there is no physical explanation. There is no way to properly grasp how God can be 3 persons, and yet 1. It is mind boggling, and so fascinating. This is just one aspect of why the contents of this verse are so precious to us. Our God, though He is 3, is 1. That is how mighty He is!
2 – God’s individuality: There are various religions that give thanks to various kinds of gods, saying that one god created light, while another created various aspects of the earth, and so forth. These other religions, specifically at the time that this passage was written, had such reliance on various different beings. They couldn’t fathom a God like ours who had the might to not just be ruler over something, but be ruler over everything! That is how mighty our God is, the one and only true God didn’t need help from others, and still doesn’t need help from others. He is the one and only true God.
3 – God’s personal standard: If you are in a room of 100 people then you will simply never be able to please all of them. Why is that? It’s because everyone has their own standard of what is good. Even if you have 2 people in front of you, at some level they will disagree, because again, everyone has their own standard. Since God is one, He only has one standard for us. We don’t have to be pleasing other gods in their own individual ways, we just have to follow His one and perfect law that He handed out to us.
There is no one higher than He, there is no one mightier than He. Let us be thankful that the Lord is our God, and that the Lord is 1!
